In developing countries, half the children who are born blind die before they turn 2.
It’s a horrifying fact. But it’s true.
Can you imagine that? A child born blind won’t ever learn to read. They’ll never be able to play sports or even see their mother’s face. And half of the children born blind will die before their 2nd birthday.
It’s terrible, but it’s true. Blind children get less food than their siblings. They get less attention and less love.
Why? Simply because a blind child is a burden to an impoverished family.
Even if they survive, what then? They’ll be lucky to get an education, much less a job. In the developing world, if they can’t see, then they can’t cook, they can’t work, and they can’t help their family survive. Their life is ruined before it even begins.
That’s why we’re here.
We’re here to give sight to the blind. Cornea disease is curable! All it takes is a simple transplant surgery to replace the diseased, cloudy cornea with a healthy clear one. It’s a procedure that most families in the third world can’t afford.
For just $120 — the cost of an expensive dinner, a night at a hotel, or a new cell phone — you can make a blind person see!
Can you think of anything else you could buy for $120 that has that much value?
We can’t. That’s why we’re going to end cornea blindness.
